Teaching Philosophy

The Reticent Warrior Way

“See first with your mind, then with your eyes, and finally with your body.” Yagyu Munenori (Ronin)

Reticent means restrained, reserved and quiet. A Reticent Warrior therefore is one who is highly trained in the art of war but shows quiet restraint when not in battle. This calm restraint and attitude is part of the ethos and philosophy of who we are and how we teach.

At Reticent Warrior Tactics, we do not teach that our way is the “only” way. Training methods (ours included) are always evolving and improving. Our goal is simply to use the most up-to-date empirically validated and scientifically researched methods that work best under stress. We teach what we believe to be the best Behavior Compliant (BC/CQB), Firearms and Fighting Tactics/Techniques and Integrated Survival Combatives (ISC) based on the current available research and best practices. We combine those elements with our philosophy on warrior mindset and readiness. We are passionate about our system and excited to share our teachings with those in need.

As you can see from our Instructor Cadre page, our instructors are some of the best there are with years of real-world training and experience. Please don’t let our resumes intimidate you. We are coaches, teachers, leaders and instructors who have a passion for helping others perform better and stay safer. We ask that you come to training with an open mind ready to learn and absorb all you can. We respect all students and expect the same in return. We will not make you look or feel dumb regardless of your skill level or experience level. We are here to help you move forward in your skill development, critical decision making and help you become a more competent protector. Competence leads to confidence which increases safety and allows you to make better and faster decisions under stress. Confidence also builds character which is the underlying trait that builds courage. If these are traits you want to further develop, come and train with us.

Our methods and teachings may be a little different than what you have previously experienced. We use Performance-Based training combined with limited Standards-Based training. Obviously, we have high standards for our training programs but we don’t simply train to ambiguous standards, we train for your forward progress. Our focus is to help you improve your personal performance (skillset) at whatever level you are at today so you can be better, faster, smarter and safer tomorrow.
